[The worst house in Norfinbury, currently home to the worst doctor. Stein isn't doing well, but he's still alive, and he intends to stay that way. He's away from the door, but he's not hiding, and when they open the door (it's not locked) he gives a friendly wave.]

I was wondering if you'd follow me.

[Isn't that a sight to behold. Beckett doesn't know how well he can follow on; Kindred are natural liars, but lying too overtly would take energy. He sticks to standing at Fiona's back, giving a nod to back her words, and, rather than letting the adrenaline get the better of his exhaustion, letting it fall over him like a leaden weight.

Not that hard. Just the sight of the mould makes his lungs protest. He takes half a step back and stands half out in the snow, a silent, shivering image of misery. No pouncing and biting from him, surely?]

[He laughs, not bothering to look nonthreatening (that would take effort right now, energy his body doesn't actually have).]

Before you try to kill me. [A step closer, hands in his pockets.]

Do you think you'll succeed?

[Trying to look as if killing the doctor hasn't occurred to him is bound to fail, Beckett thinks. What he needs to do is look like he can't pull it off. Stitches is threatening; fine. He is not.]

Just tell us what we want to know, [he says in half a growl, half a croak, and leans heavily against the doorframe. Just stay off the centre, let Fiona the game she's obviously good at.]

Of course you are. [He's starting to pace, unable to stay still or contained. Frustration leaks into his tone, washing away the confidence.]

If you weren't trying to kill me, I'd question how much you really cared about him. He's gone, and you can't see the sense in it, and you want someone to blame other than Rhys himself.

Beckett can tell you I'm not the sort of man who would have done this just for my own amusement. If I were, I would have taken him up on his request to lobotomize House. [Contrary to what the camp or might want to believe, that request has never been a secret.]

Observation and experimentation. I was watching him closely. There's no sign he was recovering, or ever would have recovered. I made a medically valid choice. You just can't see that, because you liked him. It's entirely all right to be upset with me, I understand.

The seizures, the mental confusion, movement abnormalities and slurred speech... He wasn't showing any signs of recovery, he was going to continue to deteriorate. [Stein... probably believes that. He wants to believe it, so he does. There was no chance that Rhys could have ever recovered.]

You don't want to listen. You're not going to listen even if I explained the situation in full. Don't drag this out by pretending that you're going to listen to me.

No. I'll talk, but I'm not going to sit still while I do it. It's like I told you before [that "you" is directed past Fiona, to the obviously exhausted vampire] there are some inconvenient lingering mental symptoms that I'm hoping are from exposure to those corpses, or perhaps some other investigations I've been doing. I don't have all the details, but hyperactivity appears to be part of it.

[A very small part of it, but it explains why he's still pacing, and talking far too quickly. The probably unsettling distractibility is another symptom.]

I know Beckett has some sort of purely physical symptoms, but he's refused to share information with me, so I can't work on a more coherent theory.

[What symptoms? Beckett is briefly uncertain, but it's the briefest of flickers. Whatever they are, they're not likely to matter when it comes to the fight. But Stein acknowledging his presence again is not good... he's going to have to play what part he can. He raises his head, blinking as though trying to focus on the pacing doctor.]

Is that relevant? [At least he doesn't need to pretend he isn't suspicious. That'd be a lost cause.] What - what do you need to know?
