[The tone is...a little patronizing, unfortunately. The brainwashing hijacked the whole nurturer/shepherd/father theme he has going on for his affection for the potential new converts.]

[That sounds an awful lot like healed. Stephen's unmoored in time right now, conflating these injuries with those of the past. He sounds almost...hopeful at the word, even if he's afraid to be.]
I have tried -- everything --

[He doesn't even know about the past injuries Stephen is talking about. If he did, he might have possibly started to become confused, led off-topic or away from him.
But he doesn't know. And the brainwashing's information does the rest, fills in the appropriate answer from its selection of knowledge and ideals, possibly in the closest to its intended use it has come since he's suffered it.]

[That doesn't sound right. Stephen shifts his weight forward to lean on the bars again. It takes the weight off his neck, even if he can't quite remember why that's a problem right now.]
What are you going to do? What's the treatment plan here?
no subject
[Oh, he's leaning on the bars again...]
Don't lean too hard...
no subject
[If he sounds irritated, that's because he is. Stop telling him not to do things he's not even doing.]
And I'm not helpless. I'm just...I'm just...having some trouble right now...
no subject
[He keeps a worried eye on his hands on the bars, though doesn't warn him away again.]
no subject
Humility and helplessness....
[He shudders, remembering the lesson told to him. His mouth sets in a hard line, though, as he pushes back against the insistent thought.]
They're not the same thing.
no subject
[He smiles faintly and shrugs, not that Stephen can see it.]

[He may have missed the metaphor, but he got distracted by it - it kind of provokes a logical loop he can't figure out how to break. Prideful to assume everyone can be converted? But everyone must be converted?]
no subject
Not anyone. Not her, and not me.
no subject
[He says with an extremely unbothered smile as he comes out of his internal conundrum having brushed the matter aside entirely. Doublethink only falls apart when it's examined.]
You're right in that it may fail. But I hope it doesn't. The more people serving the Prophet, the better we all will be.

Are you all right? Please be careful... We warn against defiance for your safety, you know...
no subject
[He's not putting his foot back down yet, but the worst he's done is stub a few toes -- even if he'd wanted to, he wouldn't have been permitted to kick hard enough to break any bones.]
no subject
[If only he wasn't such a nurturer, really - the brainwashing's had to soften the impact of discomfort and anger directed at him to keep him from straining to break it at every turn. The end result being he's kind of a jerk without even trying or consciously intending to be.]
