Andromeda? Well, she doesn't usually respond in words.

But last time I went to see her I asked her for help in getting some people out of a rather dire situation and the next morning she addressed us saying she heard our cries for aid. She ended up helping us a great deal after that and opened a way for people to escape.

So she does hear us, even if she doesn't always seem to say anything at first.

So, she can communicate, but not verbally.

[ This is all way outside his sphere of knowledge or experience. ]

Does she communicate telepathically?

[ But that would involve words, wouldn't it? He's just trying to make sense of this. ]

Uhm, not exactly.

She can't speak into our minds, at least not that I've noticed. It's more like we do most of the talking and she reacts. I think she can speak sometimes but it's a disembodied voice.

Hm, how should I best explain this...

[He thinks quietly a moment.]

Think of it like a one way mirror. She's outside, we're inside. She can't interact with us but she can see and hear us and she come and leave things when it's safe, which seems to be when we are sleeping or looking another way. We, however, can neither see her nor hear her unless she wills it.

I have about zero experience with any of this, so I didn't seriously think she was using telepathy. That makes considerably more sense that she just reacts to what's being said.

Good analogy. I understand what you mean when you put it that way.

Don't feel too bad, most of us haven't ever experienced anything like this before coming here. I'd say you get used to it but that does not appear to be the case. I think more long term residents simply learn to adapt to the uh...chaos.

I'm a fairly new arrival, myself. It can feel like quite a lot to absorb sometimes, can't it?

It's just that where I come from, we don't have advanced artificial intelligence, or- Anomalies running around, or any of the other unusual things that characterize this place.

It really can, and I'd expect that it never really gets any easier.

We're all in this together, at least. If you ever need help just ask, I'm sure someone will come. The people who cause trouble seem to be identified pretty easily.

Myself? I'm always willing to help. I may be...well, I don't want to say something like "I'm lucky" but I do at least come from a place that does have advanced AIs and something not unlike the anomalies.

Well, I'm glad you see it that way. Not that I can speak from any kind of experience here, but it seems to me that in situations like ours, there are two types of people: the ones who want to work together and the ones who don't. Or the ones who want to keep that from happening.

And if there's ever anything I can do, you can always ask.

[ He pauses for a second. ]

So you're used to doing what you have to in order to survive.

[ He's never seen the anomalies, but he can at least imagine what they must be like. If chaos is from a place that has things like that, then his respect for him went up a few notches. ]

Mm, I wouldn't put it quite that way.

Where I'm from there are beings called Gnosis. Like the creatures here they have a mostly incorporeal form and weapons can't harm them. We've developed technology that forces them to physically manifest, however, which can at least give us a fighting chance when they show up.

We have no such technology here, not yet anyway.

[ Wilson probably shouldn't be theorizing about things he doesn't know very well, but at least chaos doesn't seem to mind... At least as far as he can tell, anyway. ]

Sorry, I really have no basis to work from here. Where I'm from, everything is decidedly- Well, normal. We don't have monsters, or technology like you're talking about. '

[ He grins sheepishly, hoping at least some of the tone carries over into his voice. ]

My theories must sound ridiculous to you.

Not at all. I think having many different kinds of theories will be the key to us finding a way out of this place.

We wouldn't make any progress if we all thought the same way and were drawing from the same pool of experiences.
